PUBLIC SPACE STUDIES AND DESIGN

Products include Scoping Studies, Bicycle Network Plans, Public Space Design, Scenario Studies, Detailed Design

The public space is the nerve network, the artery system or perhaps even the heart of any city. Meeting place, place for economic interaction, traffic system and performance space - the public space of any city serves a multitude of purposes. In many contemporary urban areas, car traffic is overly dominant, and a re-shaping of public spaces is needed to make more space for pedestrians, for parks, and –particularly in the US- for bicycles. Urban design is a tool to re-balance the use of the public space, both by providing good transportation solutions and by creating attractive, pedestrian oriented city spaces.

Urban Progress provides the analysis and design capabilities to rethink public space in a way that provides more and better space for pedestrians and bikes. Its plans help to invigorate the role op the public space as a meeting place and domain for interaction for the city and its inhabitants. Urban Progress works on public space plans at the levels of the overall network level down to the detail design. Its approach incorporates wider transportation development and sustainability issues into the public space design. The network level includes visioning for a public area, and its connections to the overall network. The detailed design includes prioritizing connections to imagining the public space in detail. Urban Progress teams up with graphic designers and architects to design bikeway signage, racks etc.

Prospective clients include local administrations, developers, NGO's and community groups. Urban Progress aims to integrate the interests of the wider community into each assignment.
